Abstract

Introduction: Arthrogryposis multiplex congenital is a non-progressive condition characterized by various severe joint contractures, muscle weakness and fibrosis. Its incidence is estimated to be 1/3000 live births. Syndromes and congenital diseases are associated with a difficult airway, but arthrogryposis, despite its involvement in the cervical spine and joints, is rarely described as a predictor of a difficult airway.

Airway management in patients with congenital malformations can be challenging due to their anatomical and physiological characteristics. The diagnosis of a possible difficult airway in neonates is complicated, since there are no precise predictors.

Objective: to generate evidence on the association between arthrogryposis and the difficult airway in the neonatal age.

Case presentation: The case of a neonate with congenital arthrogryposis multiplex in which difficulty was found to approach the airway is described.

Conclusions: AMC is a condition that you may suspect is related to a probable difficult airway. It is important to have a careful and well-planned approach during the perioperative period to ensure adequate ventilation and oxygenation and avoid related morbidity and mortality.
