Self-perception of Research Skills in Anesthesiology and Resuscitation Residents

Abstract

Introduction: Self-perception of research skills reflects how residents feel about their performance in scientific research. There is a close relationship between self-perception and intrinsic motivation, which implies aptitude and attitude for carrying out the research process.

Objective: To describe the self-perception of research skills in anesthesiology and resuscitation residents.

Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on the self-perception of research skills in anesthesiology and resuscitation residents at the Arnaldo Milian Castro University Hospital in Santa Clara between September 2023 and December 2024. The universe consisted of 28 residents in the specialty. The probabilistic sample selection included all residents, using purpose-driven stratified sampling. The analysis was based on a survey developed by the author. The reliability of the questionnaire was achieved through expert criteria, The indicators established to enable the measurement of both variables were analyzed using a qualitative Likert scale: adequate (A), moderately adequate (MA), and inadequate (I).

Results: The greatest deficiencies in self-perception of skills were related to adequate review of the literature, selection, development, and application of methods and instruments, preparation of the final written report, and use of the Vancouver standard.

Conclusions: As part of the self-perception of research skills, moderately adequate self-assessment and demotivation predominated in most respondents.
