Abstract

Introduction: Complex regional pain syndrome presents with an acute phase of neurogenic inflammation, conceptualized by Bonica in 1953.

Objective: To evaluate the use of ultrasound for stellate ganglion block in patients with this syndrome and anatomical variations of the neck.

Case presentation: The case is presented of a 63-year-old female patient who underwent stellate ganglion blocks for chronic pain of 8-month duration, operated on her upper limb and for a thyroid tumor 4 years ago, with a scar that obstructs palpation of the structures. The decision was made to do the block with ultrasound, in which case we can see the structures and a satisfactory result was obtained.

Conclusions: The use of ultrasonography for stellate ganglion block with in-plane approach is an effective option in patients with scar deformity of the neck.
