Abstract

Introduction: Postpartum haemorrhage is the leading cause for maternal mortality worldwide, but it can be prevented if treated properly.
Objective: To describe the perioperative behavior of patients with postpartum haemorrhage treated at Dr. Luis Díaz Soto Central Military Hospital from January 2013 to September 2014.
Methods: A descriptive, longitudinal and prospective observational study was performed. The sample consisted of 57 patients with a diagnosis of postpartum haemorrhage and who required the anesthesiologist intervention. As a preventive measure, central and peripheral venous channels were opened and vital support measures were taken to counteract complications.
Results: Uterine atony was the most frequent cause of postpartum hemorrhage in young, middle-aged, white and nulliparous patients. The main complications were hypovolemic shock and metabolic acidosis.
Conclusions: Timely therapeutic measures improve the evolution of patients with postpartum hemorrhage, while general orotracheal anesthesia is the safest method for their comprehensive treatment.
